Artist Statement - This was the beginning. The year I threw myself into painting as a means of comfort, calming, healing, and meditation. I needed space to feel everything and express it through my creativity. This collection is a jumble, because that’s what the year was - messy, all over the place, wild, confusing.
Leading into 2020, I was still reeling from a traumatic pregnancy loss, and within the first couple months, was dealt another loss when my maternal grandmother passed away. This coincided with the more significant start of the Covid-19 and staying home, navigating uncertainty, fear, anxiety, and grief, while trying to keep my head above water for my family.
I began exploring drawing and painting, using a variety of mediums and surfaces - watercolor, acrylic, charcoal, and drawing digitally on my tablet. The subjects of my pieces are a blend of nature and spirituality, exploring feminine forms and the ideas of what nature looked like during this time - less polluted, more wild, untouched, growing freely.
